Contax G2 Shutter Release Cable

G2 Owners..
I contacted Kyocera by phone and left a message AND I sent them an email. Both times I asked why the manual says not to use a generic shutter release for the G2. If/when they get back to me, I'll post the information here..

Note that the RTS III has TWO cable release sockets: electrical and mechanical. The electrical socket takes a Cable Switch L (L-30 et al), just like the G series.

If you're cheap, you can trigger the electrical socket with a paper clip.

Rico your profile says you don't even own a G camera. You stop by just to call people names? Your ideas are welcome. Your characterizatons are not.

Jeff, I was at a show this week and asked the Contax Specialist this question
the reason Contax do not recommend you use the mech cable release is for 2 reasons.
A. The thread used to attach to the release mount is different and you can strip the thread in the body if you use to much force.
I can cut its own thread which is slightly larger this means that if you then use the L-30 or similar it will be loose and fall of as you cannot tighten it enough.
B. People have been known to push the plunger so hard that it can damage the contact inside the camera.
The L release has been around for over 20 years and fits all the cameras, it is only the new series 645 and N Series that is using the LA type of release
Hope this is of interest

> Jeff, The man to speak to at Kyocera is Geoff Butler. He's on 0118 935 6300. Be interesting to nail this one down, once and for all, (including me). Stuart.

Hello,

I found this on http://www.contaxcamers.com/ in the FAQ of the ST:

--------
Q. My dealer advised me to use an electronic Cable Switch instead of the cable release I usually use. Was he scamming me?

A. The release socket on all electronic CONTAX cameras (except the original RTS) look like regular cable release sockets. This is unfortunate because a regular plunger type cable release should never be used in an electronic cable switch socket.
First, there is a possibility of damaging the contacts in the camera body and further, since there is no standard concerning how far these releases push into the camera, damage could result from pushing in too far. Second, there is no way to insure that an electrical connection will continue throughout a long exposure. If electrical contact is lost the exposure will terminate. This information applies to the RTS II, 139Q, 137MD/MA, 159MM, 167MT, RTS III, ST, RX, AX G1 and G2.

Hi Jeff,

I think I have the answer, the confusing thing is that the electronic cable release type L (used on Contax AF SLR [and G series if my understanding is correct]) uses a port that looks like a mechanical one but is not. The N and 645 models use a completely different type of port to avoid this confusion. The reason that a mechanical release may work is that being metal, the plunger will make the electrical contact and trigger the shutter release. The reason this may not be satisfactory is as mentioned in Robert Allen's post concerning thread incompatibility and damage possible through excessive force caused by the plunger. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks to all for the great feedback! I printed out your responses and will send them to my dealer so HE gets it. I guess I'll order an L release. How much do they cost anyway?

Thanks again!
Jeff
