CONTAX DSLR Speculation

FYI

I contacted Zörkedörfer in Germany, a specialist for adapters, to get a clearer view on what is possible and what not with the N-mount lenses. He is offering also an adaptor for Contax/Zeiss MM-mount lenses on Canon DSLR's.

Unfortunatley, they are closed until Tuesday. So we have to wait til we get a response to my e-mail inquiry.

Thanks Dirk. I may well go that route and secure a few key wide angle C/Y manual lenses. There a few Contax wides that have never been equalled in image quality... and would still offer the advantage of stopping down ... which I do not believe possible with the N lenses ... if they can be adapted at all.

Please keep us informed.

.. in my last phone conversation last spring with Mr. Zörkedörfer, he told me that many CANON USERS are asking for the adapter C/Y-mount lenses on Canon DSLR, just because of the Zeiss 21/2.8.

Also accordíng to Zeiss, the 21/2.8 is extremely good for digital photography. Since it is a FFL, it will be IMO also better than the N17-35/2.8.

We planned originally to offer this C/Y mount adapter for a special reduction price for Contaxinfo members. But after seeing all the limitation when using it (no comfort at all), we do not think that many would order it - which makes it not cheap enough for a special contaxinfo price.

For those, who want to look at it, this is the webpage:

Just mention, that you are coming from Camera-info/ Contaxinfo

I use the Zeiss 21mm (along with other C/Y lenses)on a 20D and it is streets ahead of the Canon 17-40mm (which seems to have a good reputation).
Check this link

(and the follow on test link at the bottom of the page) it will give some insight into how good the Zeiss 21mm is.

BTW the Zeiss 100mm f2.8 Makro Planar also gives results which are simply stunning. Try this actual pixel section for detail:

Looking at the test pictures on the link you provided, I would say that the Canon 17-40mm is not as good at the corners whereas the Zeiss 21mm is sharp from corner to corner.

With the 20D's 1.6x crop factor, it would make little difference, as you are not using the corner edges of the lens, so you can say that the 17-40 is really very good for non-full frame bodies like the 20D and 1D Mk II, as you are only using the center part of the lens.

FYI

I owe you still the outcome of the Zeiss N-lenses to Canon EOS adapter inquiry. I talked to Mr. Zörkedörfer and he said it would not be possible technically.

Yeah Dirk, I kind of figured that one out by myself. The N aperture control is electronic, therefore the lens cannot be stopped down mechanically. Thank you for checking anyway, it was worth a try.
