Contax 167MT

Does anybody have trouble occasionally with film not loading correctly in the camera. For ex&le, I'll load the film, close the back, and then start shooting. Only after the film counter keeps going to 37, 38, 39, ... do I realize that the film never advanced. The camera, however, continued to count as if everything is okay. At this time, if I then press the automatic rewind, it rewinds the film leader and I lose the film roll. If I didn't realize the problem, I'd lose the film. In this way, I've lost three rolls of film and some great opportunities.

When loading the 167 always look at the little window on the back when winding on to the first frame - if the little white stripe is seen to be rotating , then the film has correctly engaged the take up spool . Steve

Hello John,

I had a 167MT as my first Contax more than 10 years ago. One thing I always remember was this little wheel in the back which is rotating when the film is advanced. I'm missing this a bit on my ST.
The ST is using a similar film loading mechanism to the one in the 167MT. On both cameras I never had such problems. I simply pull the film out to the orange index mark and make sure that the holes in the film are properly placed over the transporting gear of the camera.
Your films aren't lost. I've got a tool from HAMA, which allows you to get the film lever back out of filmcan. There was a similar tool available from ILFORD.

Hi all. I have just joined/registered the Forum. What an excellent web site this is! I've had a 167MT for about 15 years. A fantastic camera but it developed a fault a few years ago: the motor-driven film wind-on occasionally failed to operate after taking a shot. Instead, the camera would attempt to wind on the film (the motor could be heard). I had to switch the camera off and on several times to advance the film. I had it repaired and it was ok for a while. It's now happened again so I've taken it to a specialist dealer who tells me that the clutch is slipping due to the small amount of oil inside evaporating and then condensing onto the clutch. It's now being stripped and cleaned. Anyone else had this problem?

Hi Alan
I also had the 167MT, bought it in 1992 and this year it started with the winding without winding problem.
I talked to the autorised repairman in Denmark who told me it was the clutch, and that he could fix it for about 600 kr, which is 90$/euro. I got it fixed and it now works great again.

I have a 167MT with a TLA20 flash and I am intereted in getting information on how to use the flash. I have a copy of the 167 manual, but the section flash is very limited. I seem to have trouble getting the flash exposure rigth, it is usually coming out too strong despite trying options of low, high and auto.

Does anyone have quick tutorial on use of this flash unit with the 167? Also consider that I always shoot in A priority because I have a mix of CZ and other lens.

Thanks - JOB
