E 500 with Vivitat 283 Flash

Hi all, I was wondering if I could use an old Vivitar 283 with my E 500. I have heard both yes and no. I was wanting to use it from my hot shoe but if I could use it wireless and drive it as a slave from my pop-up flash, that would also work for my needs. I'm shooting a quick group of Children in a Gym and know that the lighting is less than perfect. I'd like to keep my ISO at or near 100 so I know the Images will be dark to start with.

I know that I should use the Olympus FL50 but don't have the time or money right now.
