EOS 500 Reducing Flash Output

Anyone worked out a way of reducing the flash output so it can be sued to trigger slave flashes to avoid using a cable or IR Trigger unit .I tried putting tape across the flash lens but I think that doesnt allow the heat to dissapate.I would like to reduce it to a level that wouldnt affect the exposure based on the studio units
