Confused about image quality

Just purchased a nikon d40 with an 18-200 mm vr lens and there's a difference between the image on the camera's lcd screen and the image of the same picture on my computer using pictureproject. The image on the lcd is terrific - sharp and nice colors. However the same image in pictureproject is not sharp and slightly washed out colorwise. If I use the edit functions available on pictureproject then that image can be made to also look sharp & colorful. Why is there this difference to begin with?

The LCD screen at the back of your camera is not good enough to show pictures, try to zoom in on it whit the zoom function. Or use histogram! And one thing more, calibrate your computer screen. Do it whit built in function in your computer. >
