Lens resolving power and sensor size

Like many Contax G users, I would love to see the development of a digital rangefinder camera that could use the superb G lenses. But would it not be necessary for the sensor in this camera to be full-frame (35mm) size for the lenses to exhibit their usual resolution? For instance, if the sensor is 1/2 size, then the effective resolution of a lens would be reduced by 50%, in which case, the lens would no longer seem as superb as it does now. I believe this is the rationale for Olympus designing the digital lenses for their new E1 with twice the usual resolving power.

This raises an interesting question about a possible digital Leica M: How large will its sensor be?
