Scanning Negatives Positive

J

Interesting trick I saw on one of the forums - maybe this one. I can't remember. I had been having great difficulty scanning my negatives on my Nikon Coolscan III. The trick was to scan the negative as a positive, producing a negative image, then invert it in Photoshop. At least for me, it produces much better images than I was getting the normal way.

Here's a s&le of the "trick". I have a great deal more flexibility in controlling brightness and contrast vs. the normal scanning mode. In the normal mode, the highlights kept getting blown out and no detail in the shadows. Maybe it is time to replace the scanner?
