Any thoughts on this lens? Any s&le images? I want a really wide angle lens but not a fish eye.

Many thanks.

Vishal.

Vishal,

I've had this lens for about four years. Although I don't use it often, it's a great buy at the present price (paid the equivalent of US$500 in Sep 2000 in Berlin). The lens is small, well built and optically as good or better as can be expected of a lens of this focal length, which is to say that it has sone severe light fall-off towards the corners and that it's sharp (about 40lpp/mm) in the field, degrading outside of a 18mm circle. As I shoot only negs, I cannot comment on color temp. Expect some color fringing (chromatic aberration) in the outside of a 12mm circle but not noticeable unless you enlarge over 16X.

The images I have don't really show its shortcommings, but rather its advantages. You can check some at http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1385561, http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1385584, http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1232378 and http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=1385576. PS, most lenses will mount slightly crooked, specially if used with a bayonet adapter. This does not appear to cause any vignetting with the notched integral lenshood. However, if this disturbs you, it's easily corrected by removing the rear plate and the brass shim underneath, then repositioning the thread to one of the avilable five positions. I hope this helps.

This seems to be a new post - I've been asking about this lens for a couple of weeks now, in the M7 body section. Thanks so much to Jorge - your pictures decided the issue for me, and I've just ordered one from Robert White (in the UK) for less money than I've seen anywhere, including Ebay. Jorge's criticisms are useful, as well - I'm not now expecting it to be as good as my 24mm Summicron Aspherical (as if!), but still a lens with good results if used in the right conditions. Will try to post a picture or two when I've used it.

Sorry - I've made a stupid mistake! The 24mm is an ELMARIT Asph. Still a great lens, and as Shakespeare said, "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Andrew,

Nothing to it; enjoy your lens!

Hey Andrew,

Thanks for the link to the M7 section. Interesting reading! I am off to the camera fair in SW1 this weekend, hopefully I can pick one up for cheap!

Vishal.
