Nikon broke my camera

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had anything to suggest in this situation. I've had my Nikon D70 for a 2-3 years now, but I have been using it minimally due to school. During these years however, I have never had a problem with it and I've always treated my camera like my first born. After about 8 months of it sitting in the closet, I took it out, put the battery in and the memory light kept flashing and my camera would not start. I tried recharging the battery but that didn't work. Eventually, I found this website that described exactly what was happening:

I sent my camera in to have it fixed/replaced, annally packaged. After a month of not hearing from Nikon, I called them back to see what was happening to my camera. They gave me a quote of $492.00 for external, internal and lens damange. The guy there explained there was a huge crack from one corner to the other on the back of the camera. I explained that that was not how I sent the camera and he told me to take it up with Purolator. Purolator refused my claim because they said I was outside the 21-day window for when I could have made the claim. They also said that Nikon is fully aware of this window and should have called me in time. Nikon says they receive too many cameras and could not have called me in that time frame. Now I'm trying to get a hold of an all-too-busy manager and explain my problem to him/her. This is crazy! This camera was 2000 dollars and I received it as a gift. I didn't do anything wrong, why should I have to pay for someone else's blunder?
