I understand this flash has basic manual features such as being able to set the flash power from full power to the power of 1/16... My question is, if I was to lower the flash power to maybe 1/8, and shoot continuously at 3fps, will the flash be able to keep up with the camera like flash's such as the nikon sb600, sb700 and sb900?

Ross...I can not speak on the 610...but I have 530's and 500's both Super and ST models...

I would get the Super model of the flash...first and foremost....the ST in the two models that I have is really just a TTL style flash...it takes it's commands from the camera...

If you shoot 3fps over a long period...no flash will keep-up...you need a strobe set-up with a built in fan so that it stays cool...

We did a test about a years ago with Six flashes...

Nikon SB800
Sigma DG Super 530
Canon 580 EX
Sony F56AM
Metz MZ58
Bower SFD926N

To see which one handels the best...we put all the flashes on triggers and hand fired all of them at first....all had about the same refresh speeds at full power....at 1/8 the Bower/Metz/Nikon were faster....1/16 all the times were equal...

Next we fired them on a camera as fast as possible for as long as possible...about 20 sec in the Sony/Cannon burned up...at 30 sec the Nikon burned out...at 40 sec the Sigma burned out...and at 50 sec the Metz/Bower finally burned out...these were shot at 1/16 power continuously...the shutter was just depressed until the flash gave out...the Nikon/Canon/Sony/Sigma actually melted the Metz/Bower just blew the tube...and got really hot...

In relation...we used a stobe setup next...and got about 15mins of continuos fire before the bulbs gave out.....

In practice you would not due this that long...but maybe this will help you for what you are wanting to shoot...our test was for sports inside a gym...the gym wanted to see if they could rent flashes with triggers to parents and what would work better...they ended up putting in 4 sets of strobes...and renting out triggers from there...

Good Luck and sorry about the long explanation...
