Minolta MF lenses on AF bodies

Hi!

I'm wondering whether Minolta mount MF lenses(e.g Tamron,Tokina,minolta....) can be used with Minolta AF body ?? If so, Would it affects metering system ?? I'd appreciate if you could share your experience and info with us. Thanks!

Alvin

The longer answer is that yes, with an adapter, MF lenses can be mounted and used on bodies at least as new as the 800si (not sure about the Maxxum/Dynax 5, 7 or 9). In some cases, you need to cycle some of the camera's switches in a certain way (one time, and unique to each model) to allow the body to use the lens. pietruch@juno.com

Hi Joe,

I never heard of this. How is this adapter called and which functionalities are not working when using it?

What would be an average price for this adapter?

Dirk

Hello Dirk!

I'm most familiar with one made by Rokunar, although I've heard of others by different brand names.

It consists of at least one optical element (due to the difference in lens-to-film-plane distance), but no electrical contacts or aperture lever. Because of this, you manually select the aperture and manually focus, but can operate the camera in Aperture-Priority mode - since I usually used this adapter with a MF 80-200/2.8 (before I picked up an AF lens in the same range) used wide open, it worked well for me.

As for price, mine came as part of a package deal on eBay, but I would expect to pay between $35 and $65US if I was looking for one new.

You can see some of my shooting at http://www.shuttercity.com/ShowGallery.cfm?AcctID=722 if you're interested (most of the shots there were done using an X-700, although I hope to post some taken with my 800si soon).

Regards,

Joe

Exactly Joe.

The adapter have one optical lens for to have a possibility to focusing to infinity. Many brands : Hama, Vivitar, Kenko...

Tamron? Did someone say TAMRON?

The short answer is: YES MF-mount lenses CAN be attached to AF bodies!!!

Tamron Adaptall 2 manual focus lenses have Adaptall 2 adapters that let you use them on Minolta manual focus AND Minolta
auto focus cameras WITH NO TELECOVERTER effect - also you can get adapters for other cameras, so my Nikon and Canon
and Olympus and Contax/Yashica and so on cameras can use the SAME Tamron LENSES.

And Tamron lenses are NICE lenses, too.

Of course, on an auto focus camera, they remain manual focus lenses, and since the aperture operating mechanisms (if any)
on auto focus cameras tend to be different then the aperture operating mechanisms in older, mechanical manual focus
cameras, these lenses tend to operate in "stop down metering" mode when fitted to auto focus cameras - BUT THEY WORK
and work fine!

I also have teleconverting adapters from "ufo" suppliers (~1.1x to ~1.6x) and from Minolta themselves (2x) and Sigma made
an AUTO FOCUSING adapter for manual focus lenses (set the lens on infinity and shoot!) but it only works for the
5000/7000/9000 cameras and not later auto focus models, but it works quite well.
