Tamron Lens compatibility

Along with several leica primes that I have used with my R3 and SL are two Tamron 2 Adaptalls. I have both the SL and the R adapters. I recently purchased an R8. I was suprised to learn that my non APO 2X extender could not be used along with a number of other lenses. Is it safe to use the Adaptall with the R8 (I have a 24 and a SP 70-210 3.5 Tamron)?

> >>>>>>>>>>R3 and SL...two Tamron 2 Adaptalls. I have both the SL and the R adapters. Tamron states in their "special instructions" that their L-R adapter cannot be used with the Leica R3 or SL. "The adaptall custom mount is designed for use with Leica R4 series of cameras (R4, R4S, R4S II)". Can't be used at f/32 even if your lens has this stop. Can't use the 200-500 6.9 lens (model 06A). That was their current reply when I asked Tamron about a year ago. You can use 2 cam lenses on a R3 and newer but give up some metering options.

I can imagine what Leica would say if you asked them about the use of 3rd party lenses. Let us know if you are successful in using the Tamron adapter. But there is always the down side of causing some expensive damage, especially since the L-R adapter was designed way before the R8. Another factor (esp with wideangles such as your 24mm) is the distance from the rear element to the mirror. Reminds me of the situation where some auto enthusiasts were contemplating some major engine rework on a well known import. Someone made the comment, the factory engineers can experiment and get a new engine when their engine fails. You can't. Best wishes, Tom C

I have been using the L/R adapter on my R3 with the Tamron SP zoom for four or five years now (before that, my only long lens was a 200 on a Visoflex I on my M2). It seems to work correctly. The Florida dealer I purchased the adapter from had a R3 label pasted on top of the R4 designation on the box (I still have the box). Is it possible that there was some sort of variation here, or did the dealer simply relabel? I have not had any trouble with it, but the lens has recently been transfered to my SL (with the SL adapter) since the viewfinder is a good deal brighter.

>Hi Marvin, Does the Tamron adaptall-2 L-R adapter work in all modes with your R3? Av as well as Manual? If so, that's good news. It would make sense as all Leica R lenses, even the one's marked "for Leica R only" have the required 3rd cam. That's all that the Tamron unit has, too.

There is the Leicaflex adapter (which you have already). It would be nice if Tamron were more specific on why they say what is compatible or not in the use of their Leica R adapter.

I have now tried the adaptall-2 on my R8 with both the Tamron SP zoom and the 24mm 2.5. The numbers that come up in the finder window do not match the camera setting in any mode. Suprisingly, the actual photos seem to be properly exposed. I have decided not to try this system any longer with the R8 and use the Tamrons only with the R3, where they seem to perform well

I have the Leicaflex SL with the magnificent 2 cam 50 Summicron and the 90 (2 cam) f2.8 Elmarit. I'm on a budget so have used Tamron 17mm f3.5 early with built in filters with the adaptall marked Leicaflex SL as well as 135 f2.8 Tamron.....great lenses! Unfortunately my 90mm f2.8 Tamron Macro does not fit the SL adapt-all ring. So I use the 90 with Nikon F2A. Other lenses used with success are 35 f2.8, 105 f2.8 and 300 f5.5 TX mount with Leicaflex Soligor-Vivitar adapters. So I can go from 17 to 300mm with these lenses.
