D70 vs D100

Folks,

Comments on "Digital" lens.....

I am looking to Nikon for a D70, but am curious about the use of lenses other than the 18-70 Nikor offered as part of the kit.

In particular, the Tamron Ultra 28-200 & 28-300 are of interest. I have heard however, that traditional lenses may bend and refract light in such a way that affects the performance of the small sensor utilized in a digital SLR. This is due to the size of the sensor which is only a fraction of the size of a 35mm frame...

Any comments or experience...What about use of a High Quality teleconverter???

Thanks!!!!

Hi,

This is Alan Russell from AlanRussellMusic.com
I am from Long Island NY.

My vendor did get in today a Nikon D70 Kit with the 18 to 70mm lens. I seem to be second on line unless the first buyer doesn't show up this Friday. I do own an F100 (28 to 105 mm lens) and Nikon Scanner 4000ED. I only use Nikon gear and no substitutes.

I do print with an Epson 2200 and my 13x19 prints after scanner my 35mm color negative are awesome. I hope to get the same or even better quality with this Nikon D70. Any thoughts?

Hi Alan
I would think that your 'old' combo, still will give you the best results. You will experience some ease in the workflow and great pleasure in playing with your subjects in a new and learning way, but overall quality still have a way to go.

Please use these ex&les to make your own judgement, they are all out-of-the-camera, jpeg-fine shots with d70/18-70. Focallength is the first number in the filename.

I shoot weddings and portraits digitally....bought the D70 a few days ago and I used it for a few shots on a portrait session Tuesday. Here's a slightly retouched image and an unretouched portion of the face from the same image. IMHO quality is MUCH better than 35mm...I've shot 35mm extensively and digital now for about 9 months....the digital is better....lots better than scanned negs.

Greg,

your 2 Jpg's are wonderful. I'm just wondering what they would look like in the NEF (lossless compression) if they were blown up to let's say a 13x19. The Nikon representative tells me that the D70 with the 18-70mm lens is good for a 16x20 print. BTW, which lens did you use in those two pics.

Appreciate your time and sharing..

Alan Russell

Alan,

We have to do portraits much larger than 16x20, but we have a pro lab that uses a Kodak DII interpolation engine - we can do 30x40's from a 6 megapixel image. If you print your own stuff, I would suggest looking into an interpolation program such as Genuine Fractals....Photoshop does a decent job of upsizing as well. However, 13x19 is NO problem for this camera.

The lens that I used for that portrait was an 85mm f/1.8. Settings were 1/125 @ f/8, ISO 200, Large/Fine JPEG setting. I also used normal contrast and tone and HIGH sharpening from the custom settings.

Greg,

thanks for the prompt response. On my Nikon F100 I do use a 28 to 105mm Nikon "D" lens.
Nikon tells me that I'm better off using their
18 to 70mm DX "G" lens due to the fact that it is optimized for digital whereas the Nikon 28-105mm "D" lens is not. What are your thoughts?

Alan Russell

Alan,

Don't know about which lens will work better....I have a 28-105 and don't use it much because of the variable aperature and 4.5 max opening. At f/8 it's a really good lens, but I need a more open aperature for most of my work. I like the zoom range of the 18-70 much better, though.

I used the 85mm f/1.8 for the portraits. I also shoot JPEG for EVERYTHING. RAW is just too much fuss and I can get the quality that I need from a JPEG. I shoot around 100 weddings a year and gobs of portrait sessions....RAW is just too time consuming and I get fabulous 30x40's from JPEGS.

Hi,

many are telling me that it is not necessary to buy the kit with the 18 to 70mm lens. My 28 to 105 FD lens will give me equal quality even though the 1.5x factor will increase its specs.

Any thoughts?
